Signs My Heat Pump Is Going Bad

You rely on your heat pump throughout the year. It keeps the house warm in the winter by drawing heat in and cool in the summer by pushing heat out. The average lifespan of a heat pump is 10 to 15 years, so if your pump is old and doing any of the following things, it’s time to call us for a heat pump inspection. We will determine if we can repair your heat pump or if it needs to be replaced.

Cold House

If your house is cold, the heat pump has died. If the pump is blowing cold air, there is a problem. Your home should be toasty warm inside when the heat pump is working properly. Anything other than warm air signal a problem that needs immediate attention. In fact, we recommend that you call us to inspect your heat pump now to make sure it will pump in hot air when winter hits.

High Energy Bills

Your energy bill will increase when you run the heat pump to keep the house warm. If the bill is astronomical, however, there’s a problem. This is a sign that the heat pump is not running efficiently and working too hard to heat your home. The harder it works the more energy it will use. Consequently, you may open your utility bill and have a figurative heart attack or stroke.

Reduced Airflow

A dying heat pump will also have a problem with airflow. You may feel that the air is not flowing out of the vents as forcefully as it normally does. As an aside, this can also be a sign that your ductwork is torn or clogged. No matter the cause of the poor airflow, we can fix it.

Strange Noises

Strange noises are also a sign of a dying heat pump. You do not want to hear the pump bang, clank, or squeal. This can be an indication that there is something going wrong inside the pump. We can take the pump apart to determine the cause of the strange noise and fix it.

Strange Smells

Finally, odd smells also point to a problem with the heat pump. In fact, they could be a sign that it’s time to replace the pump. As we mentioned above, it is rare to get more than 15 years out of a heat pump, so if your pump is that old, give us a call today.

We would be happy to inspect your heat pump so we can let you know if it is in good shape. If it is, great! If not, we will repair or replace it.
