Nobody wants to break their budget to keep their home warm in the winter. There are ways you can shave some dollars and cents off the heating bill. In fact, we can help with one of the ways. Our licensed and experienced technicians can make sure your heater is running as efficiently as possible. We will talk more about this below and some other ways to keep your house warm in the winter.
Check for Air Leaks
One of the first things you should do is check your doors and windows for air leaks. When air leaks into the home, it cools off the indoor temperature and releases the hot inside air. This causes your heater to run more and increases your heating costs substantially.
With the kids and pets out of the way, take a lit candle and hold it up in front of the windows and doors. If the flame does not flicker, you don’t have air leaking into the home. If the flame flickers, you do have air leaking into the home. Make note of the leaking windows and doors.
Seal Doors/Windows
Next, head to the hardware store and pick up door and window sealant. You want to seal the doors and windows that are leaking to keep the hot air inside your home and cold air on the outside. If your doors and windows are old, they have warped and this causes them to leak.
Harness the Sun
You can also warm up the inside of your home by allowing the sun to shine through the windows. Open all window treatments in the morning once the sun has risen. This allows the sun’s rays to heat your home’s interior naturally. Make sure to let the sunshine in all day long.
Close Up at Night
Close the curtains and blinds when the sun sets, however, to trap the natural heat. If your windows do not have treatments to cover them, it’s time to get some. The curtains and blinds add an extra layer of protection from the cold air that is outside of your home.
