A natural gas furnace is an economical way to heat your home. Generally, the furnace is also extremely safe, provided you have it serviced annually. Service 1st Pros advises that failure to have the furnace serviced could leave you with a gas leak. This gas leak can be dangerous because there is carbon monoxide and natural gas when it is burned. The following are signs that your furnace has a gas leak.
Rancid Odors
Natural gas is scented so you can detect when it is leaking. Unfortunately, the scent is not a pleasant one such as the smell of a rose. Rather, you will smell the rancid odor of rotten eggs if your gas furnace is leaking. If you smell rotten eggs in your home or around the furnace, turn off the gas at the mainline immediately. Once you have cut the gas, give us a call so we can come out.
Hissing/Whistling
If the gas hose connected to the furnace is leaking, you may hear hissing or whistling coming from the house. As with the smell of rotten eggs, if you hear hissing or whistling, cut the gas at the mainline so that it no longer flows through the furnace hose. You do not want to have gas leaking into your home because it is dangerous due to the carbon monoxide and also flammable.
Bubbly Water
You may also have a gas leak in one of the lines outside. If you have noticed that the water in your yard bubbles when the sprinklers run, this can be a sign that gas is leaking out of the gas line. In other words, the puddles in your yard will look as if the water is carbonated.
Dead Foliage
As we have mentioned, leaking gas is dangerous and deadly. In fact, if your household plants die all the time, your furnace may be leaking gas. This can also be a sign that you have another gas appliance that is leaking such as the stove or the dryer.
Feeling Sick
Finally, if your family feels sick all the time, your gas furnace may be leaking. Inhaling the gas can make you confused, fatigued, cause dizziness, headaches, make you feel nauseated, or cause you to vomit. It may also make you want to sleep all the time. If any of your family is suffering from these symptoms or your pads are acting strange, turn off the gas line and call us.
