If you have central heating and air, you have a series of air ducts that split away from the air conditioner unit and head into the vents in each room. These ducts look like large tubes. They are made of aluminum, plastic, or sheet-metal generally. Over the years, you can end up with a hole in one of the air ducts. They can also separate from the vents if they were stretched too tightly along their route. Service 1st Pros can replace a faulty air duct in your air conditioning system. Here are four signs you’ve got a hole in one of them.
1. There’s Little Air Flowing Through the Vent
The best way to tell that there is a problem with an air duct is to check all of your vents while your air conditioner is running. If one or more of the vents has little air flowing out of it, this is a sign that there is a hole in the air duct leading to it or the air duct has disconnected. You should have the same airflow coming out of each vent in your house. Any restrictions to the airflow indicate a problem with the air duct unless all of your vents do not have any airflow.
2. You Can Hear Excess Airflow in the Attic
If you suspect that you do have a hole in an air duct, wait until the house is silent and then listen carefully while your air conditioner is running. Depending on the size of the hole, you may be able to hear excess airflow coming from the attic. Keep in mind, it’s hard to hear this unless the air duct is really fractured. Don’t count on this as your only sign of a problem with your air conditioner’s air ductwork.
3. Your AC Is Running All the Time
Assume for a moment that the air duct leading into your master bedroom has a hole in it. As a consequence, the airflow is compromised into the master bedroom. You will notice that the air in the master bedroom is much hotter than in the rest of the house. This imbalance in temperature will cause your air conditioner to run more often in an effort to keep the house cool. You will also have an increase in your utility bill.
4. You Can See the Hole in the Air Duct
Finally, you can always go up into your attic to inspect your air ductwork. See a hole in any of the ducts, this duct needs to be replaced. Patching the hole is not always an effective way to resolve the problem. It’s better to replace the ductwork.
